Pelican State Youth Movement, in partnership with the City of Bastrop Parks and Recreation Department, will be celebrating 22 years of serving the youth of Morehouse and Ouachita Parishes while hosting this year’s Multi-Sports Camp. It will run from June 19th – 22nd. The cost is $20 per student ages 9 – 14/3rd – 9th grades. The registration fee will be waived for the first 40 registrants
Campers attending PSYM Multi-Sports Camp will participate in multiple sports such as Basketball, Baseball/Softball, Football, Track & Field, Volleyball and Golf. There will also be health and wellness and life-skills class sessions. They’ll also learn the importance of paying attention and listening, behaving well in a group setting, respect for others and their opinions, teamwork and hard work. All while having the time of their lives. We create a fun safe atmosphere that the kids enjoy. Most importantly, after lunch each day, there will be speakers from a wide spectrum of careers and backgrounds that will address various topics important to youth development, and offer the encouragement that they need.
Our annual multi sports camp is dedicated to the loving memory of Ms. Inez Grant, a former Physical Education and Math teacher in the Morehouse Parish School System, who always inspired and encouraged kids to “get involved and try”. She didn’t have a particularly gentle demeanor. Nor did she mince her words. You would know when you had crossed Ms. Grant after she had grabbed you and persuaded you with a heavy hand to the backside. Strangely enough, kids gravitated towards her. You just knew that she loved and cared for you. We strive to pay-it-forward, her “Can Do” spirit so that our youth are encouraged and confident that they can succeed with hard work, and the right attitude.
Our main message to the youth is to stay in school and study hard and to hold themselves to a higher standard by focusing more in school as it is vital to their futures.
